Communities First is a major flagship Welsh Assembly Government programme that exists to provide local people with opportunities to play an active role in shaping the future of their community. Most of the Communities First areas are quite small urban areas, chosen according to statistics for deprivation. However, Bro Ddyfi is not amongst the most deprived areas, but has pockets of deprivation with typical rural problems of hidden poverty, remote and isolated communities, poor access to services and deteriorating housing conditions.
The Bro Ddyfi Communities First area includes the four wards that make up the Powys part of the Dyfi Valley (Machynlleth, Cadfarch, Glantwymyn and Llanbrynmair), and is one of the largest, most rural, and most Welsh speaking areas to be included in the Communities First programme. The area is unique in that it is the only Communities First area in Wales that is coterminous with the Local Community Strategy Local Forum area.
