Get Involved with the Bro Ddyfi Community Land Trust

Recruiting for community land

A new group is being set up to acquire and hold land and property for the long term prosperity of the Dyfi Valley. The Bro Ddyfi Community Land Trust (CLT) is to hold its first open meeting on Thursday 1st July at the Care Centre in Machynlleth.

 The Trust aims to provide affordable and sustainable housing and other community benefits. Bro Ddyfi CLT would wish to provide houses that are affordable for a broad range of incomes (not just people able to get personal mortgages), and they will remain affordable to members of the community in perpetuity.

In addition, the Trust could play a role at Heulfryn, Esgairgeiliog - by managing or owning land or community facilities. Housing Association Grŵp Gwalia is looking into the possibility of developing affordable housing and other facilities on this site in Ceinws. Land for People and ecodyfi have been supporting the Bro Ddyfi Community Land Trust (and before that, the Heulfryn Regeneration Group) in exploring how the local community can benefit most from such a development.

The Bro Ddyfi Community Land Trust is registered as an Industrial and Provident Society, a not for profit organisation with an asset lock - so that there will be no privatisation of land assets. As democratic and local accountability is central, membership is open to local residents who agree with the objectives and guiding values, and to those wishing to endow land or property for the benefit of Bro Ddyfi.

The Bro Ddyfi Communities First Partnership is fully behind this initiative and is helping to develop the group. The Coordinator, Cyril Evans said, “We’re keen to enable local people to build a thriving and inclusive community through the democratic ownership and stewardship of land.”

The Trust is looking for people to help achieve this vision. A meeting at 7.30 on Thursday 1 July in the Machynlleth Care Centre on Forge Road will set up a Steering Group. If you can’t come but want to get involved, ring Andy Rowland on 01654 703965 or email andy.rowland@ecodyfi.org.uk.
