The Citizen's Advice Bureau in Machynlleth (tel. 0845 601421) gives advice about Housing Benefit.
Advice is also provided by the Bro Ddyfi Advice Centre (tel. 01654 700192).
Council Housing
If you are in need of accommodation you can apply to Powys County Council for a council house.
You have to fill out a form that determines the scale of your need according to a points system. For example, if you are a single parent you will score more points, you will be higher up the waiting list and you will be allocated a house more quickly than a couple with no children.
How quickly you are then allocated a house is also determined by how soon existing houses become vacant.
For more information and to apply for a council house go to the Powys County Council Area Housing Office in Maengwyn Street, Machynlleth (tel. 01654 702374). Further information and application forms are available on the Powys County Council website.
Housing Associations
Housing associations use a similar points system for allocating housing based on need. The Council's Area Housing Office can also assist with housing association applications.
There are 2 main housing associations that cover the Bro Ddyfi area: Mid Wales Housing and Cantref. Housing associations also participate in 'Homebuy' and 'Shared Ownership' schemes.
For more information go to the Housing Associations section.
Other Possibilities
New forms of community ownership and finance are proving to be successful and although they take some time to set up these sort of schemes can be relatively straightforward if you go about it in the right way.
For more information go to the sections on Community Land Trusts and the Guide to Developing Affordable Housing Schemes.
