Heulfryn Community Project, Ceinws and Esgairgeiliog

This is a project to develop affordable homes on a site near Ceinws that is owned by the Forestry Commission.

The consultation for this project was led by Ecodyfi, working in partnership with the WDA, Forestry Commission Wales, Communities First and Glantwymyn Community Council.

Rural Resources from Welshpool drew up a preliminary feasibility study for the site’s future use and carried out the community consultation work.

As a result of this, the 'Heulfryn Regeneration Partnership' was formed to look at the future development of the site.

The plans for affordable housing also include provision for a play area, a community facility and work units.

The Forestry Commission agreed to donate the land to the Bro Ddyfi Community Land Trust. Powys County Council provided funding to Land For People in order to move the project on. (Land For People are leading the development of the Bro Ddyfi Community Land Trust).

The project has suffered from some delays due to the number of different stakeholders and legal complications over the handover of the land. Project spokesperson Trish Andrews advises community-led projects to “as far as possible work with a single point of contact who has sufficient authority to deal with project issues effectively and quickly”, and also to “concentrate on land ownership issues from the beginning and in tandem with the other planning and consultation aspects so as not to lose momentum in the community”.
