Powys Communities First Conference
Stronger Communities Through Partnership Working
On 20th November 2008 all three of the Communities First areas in Powys held the Powys Communities First Conference at Hafod a Hendre, in Builth. Supported by the Communities First Link Officer, Susan Morley, Powys County Council and the Local Health Board. The day was a great success with over 90 people attending!
Delegates heard from each Communities First Area in Powys and also from the people who work with these areas.
Oldford Communities First did a presentation on how working in Partnership has improved Community Safety on the Oldford Estate. Brendan McWhinnie of the Clwyd Alyn Housing Association spoke on behalf of the Partnership. He spoke of the growing relationship with the Welshpool Neighbourhood Policing team (NPT) and the Community Safety Partnership. Brendan gave examples of the Young Peoples summer activities organised by the NPT and supported by Oldford Communities First. The NPT also supported the Welshpool Funday 2008, a Community event which Oldford Communities First co-hosted.
Brendan also introduced the Scansis all weather pitch and Oldford Play area to the delegates and explained how Partnership helped to secure these facilities. A new addition to the Oldfrod Play Area will be the Youth Shelter. A steel structure designed to allow young people to socialise in a safe environment. This was given support by the NPT and other local organisations such as Clwyd Alyn and the Oldford Tenants Association.
There were over 20 stands from different organisations.
This year representatives from PAVO, Coleg Powys and the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service signed a commitment to support the work of Communities First in the three areas of Oldford, Bro Ddyfi and Ystradgynlais.
Delegates sat down to a buffet lunch provided by Rikki Lloyds and Fontana Bakery.

Saturday September 13th saw the last Clear Up Day of 2008. Approximatley 1 tonne of rubbish was removed from the estate with as much being recycled as possible. Heather Bull, Waste awareness officer from Powys County Council was on hand to show people what could be recycled.
There have been four Clear Up Days in total this year. In total 25 tonnes of unwanted items have been removed with the help of over 100 volunteers.
We would like to say a BIG thank you to The Phoenix Furniture Scheme who have been at every Clear Up Day and have recyled countless bicycles, white goods and furniture! Thanks also to Powys County Council for the hire of the skips and to Heather Bull for all of her hard work. The biggest thank you must go to the volunteers, mainly residents who have helped out at every Clear Up Day and are taking such good care of the Oldford Estate.
