Careers Advice - independent, specialist careers advice and guidance and student support and counselling services

Looking for a job can be a frustrating task, particularly if you've been unemployed for a long time. If finding employment is proving difficult, then don't worry – there are many people who can give you the advice and support that you need.

Your local Careers Wales office can tell you all you need to know regarding getting your ideal job. They provide help with everything from writing your CV and application forms to the perfection of your interview technique. You can call their freephone number on: 0800 1830283 or you can drop in to one of their shops in: Aberdere, Brecon, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Llandrindod, Merthyr, Newtown, Pontypridd, Tonypandy.

Your local Job Centre Plus can also provide you with information and advice about jobs and training opportunities. If you are looking for part time or weekend work then visiting one of these is the best course of action to find out what is available to you. They have shops all over Powys, to find your nearest Job Centre Plus please ring 0845 6060 234.

Volunteering is an excellent way to get work experience and gain new skills to look great on your CV and will help you to obtain the job that you wish to. You can contact your local Volunteer Bureau that will provide you with information and advice about the opportunities available to you.

If you're aged between 14-30 and are struggling to get your life working then The Prince's Trust offer practical support including training, mentoring and financial assistance.

They help people to transform their lives and focus on people whoÅfve struggled at school, been in care, been on the wrong side of the law or have been unemployed long-term. Call 0800 842 842 to be put through to your local Prince's Trust office.

You can e-mail us if you feel you want to ask a question or make a comment regarding Powys and we'll do our best to inform the correct people of your thoughts.

If you need information about absolutely anything then you can visit the Powys Youth Services website or contact Chris Jones on 01597 826483 and ask. In these you'll find information and leaflets about any number of topics, or you can talk in confidence to a member of staff about any issues or problems that you may be having. If the members of staff are unable to help for any reason, they will be able to supply you with the details of somebody who can. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEBODY ABLE TO HELP.

Health

If you're having problems with your health, then you should always speak to your own GP because it's them who know you best. If you are unsure of your nearest doctor's surgery, then you can find a full list of doctor's surgeries in Powys by clicking here

If you have questions about your health, or are stressed or lonely then an option open to you is visiting your school nurse. They will listen to any problems that you have in confidence, give advice and seek the best possible solution. To make an appointment, you should find a trusted member of staff and ask how you should go about booking an appointment with the nurse – or see if they will make the arrangements for you.

If you don't want to do either of these, then confidential medical advice and health information can be found by ringing NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47.

Adfam is a national charity that works with families affected by substance misuse.

The WIRED Initiative has been set up to help individuals, families and communities tackle substance misuse.

Housing

Whether you're thinking of leaving home, or already having left, there are many places and ways to get advice from. This advice will make sure you find a safe and comfortable place to live, or will help to solve any problems that you may be having with your current home.

Affordable Housing

There are a number of options available to you if you're looking to find an affordable home, or if you have any questions regarding this.

You may be entitled to housing benefit; this is financial help for people who may not be able to afford the rent required for their home. The citizen's advice bureau in Powys will give you advice about housing benefits, and you can contact them on 08456018241. You can also get advice from www.adviceguide.org

Community schemes have been set up to help provide affordable housing with different financial solutions. For more information about how to get involved in these contact Terry Flynn, the Powys County Council Rural Housing Strategy Development Officer, by email, or telephone him on 01874 612297.

Council Housing

If you live in a council house and have any questions about your home, or if you would like to know more about how to get a council house, then you should call the housing department at the local council on 01654 702374.

If you're searching for an affordable home in which to live, then you can get advice and information from the Wales and West Housing Association. Ring them on 0870 013 1930 and they will help you to find somewhere suitable to your needs in Powys.

TPAS Cymru is the leading tenant participation organisation in Wales, helping to promote sustainable relationships between tenants and landlords.

Homelessness

If you're homeless, or know anybody else who is, or need to improve your current living conditions then contact your local Shelter Cymru office on 01874 624722; or they have a 24-hour helpline that can provide emergency advice and the number for this is 0808 800 4444. Shelter Cymru is a charity in Wales that works for the prevention of homelessness, the improvement of housing conditions, and the right of everyone to a safe, suitable and affordable home.

Alternatively, you can get free and confidential advice from your local Citizen's Advice Bureau. You can drop in to see somebody, or call in advance and make an appointment, and they will provide you with free confidential information regarding housing. Contact them on:

Homeless UK is a website dedicated to the issue of the homeless.

Benefits

If you think you might be eligible to claim some extra money in the form of benefits then you can obtain advice and information regarding whether or not this is actually possible. If you contact Powys County Councils Benefits Department on 0845 055 1355 they will be able to help find out what you're entitled to and advise you on how to obtain this.

Also, you could speak to somebody at your local Citizen's Advice Bureau, as they have Debt and Welfare Units that specialise in giving advice regarding benefits; so they will be able to give you help to claim your money. You can drop-in to speak to somebody or call and make an appointment on:

A brilliant way to meet new people, get work experience and develop new skills is by being a volunteer.
